Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay started to discover her artistic and creative side in her early years because of her Aunt Denise. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English as well as African American study. DuVernay was in college when she became interested in production for television journalism. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to observe the house of a member of the jury and look through their trash. She was disappointed by her journalism tasks and decided to change to the field of public relations. DuVernay got a job right out college, as a new publicist at a studio. She started The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. Alongside PR, the agency has launched lifestyle networks and advertising campaigns such as Urban Beauty Collective.
